I first tried Baieido Kobunboku in the late '90s and was taken aback by the amazingly complex yet subtle scent. The scent is always present, but never cloying and never distracting. Unlike most other incense I've tried, there is no specific, identifiable "scent" here - just a very complex blend of many natural aromas that is both pleasing and thought-provoking.
Early on I found the long sticks to be the perfect accompaniment for activities such as reading, writing, or finishing up evening work. My then-tween-aged daughter also began associating the aroma of Kobunboku with reading, as did my son years later.
Today, my daughter is married and living elsewhere. Both her and her husband say they can't read without first lighting a Kobunboku, and lighting one at any other time makes them want to drop everything and read. Even as I write this, my son, now a teenager, is doing his homework, with the help of this familiar, inspiring scent (which he swears helps him concentrate) filling his workspace.
There's not a relaxing or cerebral activity that goes on in our house that just doesn't seem complete without the unique aroma of Baieido Kobunboku filling the air.
